Plain Jane Knits Up A Storm

A few musings about my needlecraft hobbies - knitting, crocheting, quilting, & cross-stitch along with my other love, genealogy. While growing up, I used to HATE the term "Plain Jane", but when it comes to knitting & crocheting, I've realized that I really *am* a Plain Jane in that I don't use fancy yarns.

K4 Thursday

Our K4 group met this afternoon. There were seven of us there today. Marian & Jean had made crocheted scarves to go with 5 of the hats I've been making so 6 more hat & scarf sets (including Jean's first knit hat) went into bin that will go to the Veterans Shelter in Detroit. It's a medium size bin and it's almost full so probably next week we'll need to start another one or switch to a larger sized bin. We're working toward a mid-November deadline when Gloria will be going to the shelter again and be able to deliver everything. I cast on for a garter stitch scarf to go with one of the smoky blue hats I finished - hopefully, I'll get it and another one done by next Monday and then go back to hats which are my favorite projects.

Monday Madness

No, there's nothing strange going on - the title refers to the Mad Monday special at Hungry Howie's Pizza. It's become a tradition recently to get one of the large two topping pizzas when they sell for $7 (+ tax) and take it over to Mom's on Monday. I don't have to cook, she doesn't have to cook and all three of us enjoy. Moki enjoys too when we bring the box home so he can scarf up any excess cheese and the odd bit of pepperoni or mushroom.

Knitting class met today and Jean had finished crocheting three scarves to go with the hats I'd made. Along with the grey one that Gloria put a pom-pom on (for that one I made the hat & Jean crocheted the scarf, so with the addition of the pom-pom it was a true group project), that made 4 more sets for the Veterans Shelter.. I have at least 3 more hats finished and another one on the needles.

By My Fingernails

I haven't been posting too much lately - Mom's medical condition has me rather at sixes & sevens, and I just haven't been cheerful enough to put anything on the blog. I've been knitting - 5 hats turned in this last Thursday. Jean is making a scarf to match the red one and she has one almost finished to match the ecru with grey & brown specks, Gloria is working on a scarf for the camouflage one and Marian took at least one home to make a scarf. Since Thursday, I've finished four new hats and have another one on the needles. It keeps me busy and it keeps me from thinking.

Hats, Hats & More Hats

Last week was productive for hats. I made five to go with scarves that Frances, Marian & Virginia had made, one hat & scarf set like the ones in the last photo and three more that Marian will be making scarves to match. Frances sent in three more crocheted scarves and Jean brought in one - they'll all need hats. Because we're going to concentrate for the next month on making sets that will be donated to the Veterans' Shelter in Detroit, I matched yarn for the pastel ones and set them aside for later. The red and the rust scarves are sort of guy colors, so I knit a red hat last night to make up that set and, not being able to match the rust yarn, started a navy blue with flecks of rust & turquoise to go with that one. Jean took a couple skeins of grey yarn to make scarves and I took matching ones to make the hats. Given the cold snap we're in right now, I wish we had started on this earlier. It's 34° and yesterday set a record for the earliest measurable snowfall. Looking ahead for next week's forecast, the temperatures aren't going much higher than 60° and most days will be in the 40s. That's too cold too early!

Chugging Along

Finally a photo! These three sets are worked in solid colors along with Rainbow Dreams variegateds. The one on the left that looks rust colored is actually more of a rusty brown. That one and the middle set use the Maritime colorway of Rainbow Dreams while the one on the right uses Trade Winds. I love the way these yarns will blend with almost any solid color. One of the sets I turned in last week had Maritime combined with a smoky blue.

This week I'm concentrating on hats. Gloria, one of our K4 members and my star student in Monday's knitting & crocheting class, is volunteering at a shelter for homeless veterans in Detroit and we thought it would be a good idea to make up some hat and scarf sets that would be in masculine colors that we could donate. The shelter is serving more vets than they can house, so some are still living on the streets and will need warm clothing as winter approaches. I enjoy making hats more than scarves and Marian likes to make scarves more than hats. A partnership has been born!.. I bought home enough skeins of dark green yarn to make at least 4 hats and Marian took skeins of black yarn for scarves - next Thursday, we'll swap the yarn and she'll make scarves to go with my hats and I'll make hats to go with her scarves. We're visiting friends today and I'll take my knitting along in hopes of finishing green hat #2. I made a bright yellow hat Thursday night to go with a scarf that Virginia had made and I still have another scarf like the ones above to go with a window pane hat I finished during the meeting on Thursday. I can't tell you how much it means to me to be a part of this group, to be able to knit as much as I want and know that the finished items will go to people who need them.
